Nicky Belton Exhibition & Sale
Throughout April and May 2013 Making The Best is delighted to be hosting an exhibition and sale of artwork by popular local artist, Nicky Belton.
Nicky has a unique and contemporary approach to her subject matter, her
love of drawing blends seamlessly with the surface textures and overlaid
inks to produce delicate and well observed portraits of cats and dogs,
and studies of shoes, hats, handbags, corsets, stockings, lingerie,
dresses and chairs.

Making The Best opened its doors for the first time in October 2010. Run by Patricia Mellett, a Leighton Buzzard resident, the shop is the culmination of much planning and a great deal of hard work. Patricia has a passion for making and "up cycling", working with wood and other materials for many years. Patricia ran "Toto Mellett", a popular shop in Berkhamsted Hertfordshire, selling her woodwork, artwork and other products by local artisans and crafts people. The idea for "Making The Best" arose from Patricia's passion for making and creating. |

Patricia took inspiration from the growing number of small, better quality indpendent retailers in Leighton Buzzard (a town which is, according to Patricia, on the "way up"), the discovery of Annie Sloan's wonderful shop in Oxford and, of course, Annie’s famous chalk paints. Annie's paints are nothing short of a marvel. With them, it really is simple to turn a tired cupboard or an old chest of drawers into a stylish and truly unique piece of furniture. |

This isn't "re-cycling". It is "up-cycling", making high quality pieces from furniture that we no longer use, with simple skills that we all have or can soon learn. Driving back to Leighton Buzzard one day, from another outing to a distant homebrew shop, it struck us that 'home-made' doesn't have to mean 'second best'. What if there was a local shop with stylish up-cycled products for the home, the kits, materials and ingredients to help people make things themselves and a range of finished products to inspire?. Thankfully, Patricia found a like-minded business partner (David) and "Making The Best" was born. |
